What is the Game of Thrones?
By now you have more than likely heard about the Game of Thrones. This HBO TV series absolutely took the world by storm when it premiered back in 2011. It was created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss who based it off George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novel series called A Song of Fire and Ice. It is set to conclude with an 8th season in 2018-2019.
Each season was created to represent a specific part of George R. R. Martin’s novel series. Contrary to popular believe, each season does not correspond to a different novel. In fact, some seasons are a combination of two. Below is table mapping how the Game of Thrones TV series and Martin’s novels align:
Mapping of GOT Seasons to Martin's Novels
|GOT Seasons||Martin’s Novels|
|GOT Season 1||“A Game of Thrones”|
|GOT Season 2||“A Clash of Kings”|
|GOT Season 3||“A Storm of Swords”|
|GOT Season 4||“A Storm of Swords” & “A Feast for Crows”|
|GOT Season 5||“A Feast for Crows” & “A Dance with Dragons”|
|GOT Season 6||“A Feast for Crows” & “A Dance with Dragons”|
*The remaining next seasons (7 and 8) are now off of the novels and using new, unpublished material.

Game of Thrones Story Lines
The Game of Thrones tv series focuses on 3 main plots from Martin’s book series:
- Battle for the Iron Throne to control the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros.
- Rise of Daenerys Targaryen In Essos to reclaim the 7 Kingdoms
- The Night Watch defending the Wall
Battle for The Iron Throne
The first story line is established In Westeros where a civil war is occurring. Each house (family) is competing for power to rule the 7 Kingdoms. The primary houses involved in battle are the Starks of Winterfell, Lannisters of Casterly Rock, and Baratheons of Dragonstone who were in control until their king dies early in season one. Below is a quick video to show what the throne looks like and the faces of the houses who are battling for total control.
The Rise of Daenerys Targaryen
The second main plot centers around Daenerys Targaryen. She is the exiled daughter of the last surviving heir to the House Targaryen, which use to rule the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros before the House of Baratheon killed her father and took control. She rises as a powerful Queen by building a strong army and enforcing justice as she makes her way across Essos to cross the Narrow Sea and return reign to the House Targaryen. Her dominance is reinforced by her dragons, a species that commands respect and inflicts terror in all who stand in her way. Watch the trailer of Daenerys Targaryen to help you get a better understanding of this critical plot line.
The Night’s Watch
The third main story takes place in the northern part of Westeros at the Wall, which is a mountainous fence of ice that the Night Watch defends in order to protect the southern cities from the Wildlings and White Walkers (undead creatures with supernatural powers) who seek to overtake the Seven Kingdoms and all of Westeros.
